RECORDER Theme 3: Paleoecosystems and paleobiodiversity
RECORDER Theme 3 will develop new integrated approaches to biodiversity assessment, combining molecular biomarkers with ancient DNA and microfossils. The expertise of Excellence Chair E. Willerslev will enable us to systematically utilize the pool of ancient DNA in ocean-floor archives for the reconstruction of past ecosystems. We will deliver innovative estimates of past biodiversity, marine ecosystem turnover, and rates and patterns of adaptation. We will develop a novel conceptual framework for marine ecosystem change and stability and its role in the evolution of marine biogeochemical cycles.
