German Classes

Employees of MARUM, MPI-MM and ZMT are invited to participate in German language classes in levels ranging from beginner to advanced. The costs are covered by the respective institution where you are employed.

This offer addresses all employees (PhD students, Postdocs, researchers, technicians, engineers ...) of MARUM, MPI and ZMT and to those working in affiliated institutes in related projects (e.g. if funded through the MARUM excellence cluster).

Costs for members of GLOMAR who are not employed at any of the three institutions are covered through the graduate school.

Time schedule

Classes are held once a week for 1.5 hours for the duration of one semester (approx. 12 weeks).
There are no classes around Christmas, Easter and summer holidays. The exact dates of the holidays will be announced by the teacher at the beginning of each semester.

Material needed

Participants must bring the respective book to work with in the course (see list below). Books must be bought by the participants themselves at their own cost.
You can easily order your copy online in the university book shop on the boulevard. They will send you an e-mail when your book is ready to be picked up.

Placement test

Unless you are an absolute beginner, we kindly ask you to make a short placement test (online) to enquire which level you are in. This helps to improve the quality of the classes.

Alternative classes

The Language Centre Bremen also offers German classes.

Please note that MARUM provides funding only for those classes decsribed above. Fees for classes offered through the language centre or other schools must be covered by the participants themselves.

Independent learning

If you prefer to study independently and flexibly, you can check out the language centre's materials online, for example the language software Rosetta Stone which is available for the PC as well as for mobile devices.
