Research Interests

Within the Marine Geotechnics group, my research focuses on fluid and gas migration in the Nankai Trough subduction zone complex, SE offshore Kii peninsula, Japan. In order to improve our knowledge about migration pathways and depths, my studies rely on in situ long-term borehole data from a splay fault system inside the accretionary prism, as well as real-time drilling mud gas data obtained during riser drilling in the Kumano forearc basin. Additionally, parent bed analysis on clasts from mud volcanoes located in the forearc basin are conducted. This project is closely associated with the Integrated Ocean Drilling/Discovery Program (IODP) Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment (NanTroSEIZE).

The three projects included in my research are:

(1) Long-term monitoring at the Nankai Trough Megasplay fault: Fluids, Strain and Co-seismic Anomalies
Collaborators: Achim Kopf, Earl Davis, Eiichiro Araki, Andre Huepers

Associated Publications:
Kopf et al. (2011, 2014)
Toczko et al. (2012)
Hammerschmidt et al. (2013a, 2013b)

(2) Gas show in and beneath the Kumano forearc basin: contribution of deep-sourced gas?
Collaborators: Achim Kopf, Thomas Wiersberg, Hidenori Kumagai, Jörg Erzinger, Thomas Pape

Associated Publications:
Moore et al. (2013)
Hammerschmidt et al. (2014)
Pape et al. (2014)

(3) Do mud volcanoes indicate transport of deep fluids and gases? What do mud breccias tell us about the source depth?
Collaborators: Achim Kopf, Thomas Pape

Associated Publications:
Hammerschmidt et al. (2014)
Pape et al. (2014)
