Project description
With a total mass of almost 0.5 Gt, extracellular DNA in deep sea sediments represents the biggest reservoir of the World´s ocean´s DNA pool (Dell’Anno & Denovaro, 2005). Such DNA has been shown to be preserved in marine sediments for thousands of years bound to clay particles or organic matter. Under forces of abiotic decay such DNA is subject to damage and fragmentation which can be used to authenticate it as ancient.
In my project I am focusing on deep analysis of sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) in marine sediments collected from the sub-Antarctic region. The aim of the project is to detect, use and analyse the ancient DNA signal in order to reconstruct past prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial populations that dominated the region through the past several thousand years reaching down to Last Glacial Maximum and how they responded to various climatic events/shifts.
Application of such method provides additional toolkit to complement traditional fossil based paleo environmental tools used today in paleo-ecology and aims to expand them by providing higher sensitivity on basis of ancient DNA.
This project is part of the MARUM Excellence Cluster – The Ocean Floor, Project Enabler, Tracers.
