Project IC31 Coastal flood protection in the law of Germany and New Zealand
Europe’s, Germany’s and New Zealand’s coasts are subject to coastal erosion and increasingly at risk of flooding. Particularly coastal flood events are likely to occur more often in the near future due to climate change induced sea-level rise and storm events.
The law concerned with flood protection relates to, among others, dike construction, spatial planning, monitoring systems, disaster management, compensation for damages resulting from flood events, managed retreat, etc.
The project will inquire whether existing legal measures are adequately prepared to protect coastal communities against the increasing threats and challenges of coastal floods.
