Mara Ort (3rd cohort) and Jan Scheve (2nd cohort) have recently presented their latest work at the annual Conference of the New Zealand Coastal Society in Dunedin, New Zealand. The conference gathered coastal scientists, planners, and practitioners from all over the country, and offered a three day program with keynotes, different sessions, and excursions. Their presentations were very well received and brought them new ideas and valuable contacts.

The conference took place at St Margaret's College, a beautiful and more than 100 years old residential college at the heart of Dunedin. The city of Dunedin, located on the South Island, hosts with the Otago University the oldest University in the country.
During the conference, Mara and Jan took part in field trips to Dunedin South and Port Chalmers. In Dunedin South, the coastline is subject to erosion processes, which wash out the dunes. These dunes were reinforced several decades ago using debris. The material is now brought to the surface again, and poses a threat to beach users and the environment. The field trip to Port Chalmers was around the dredging of the shipping channel. After a presentation of the port staff, the group headed out to have a look at the area.
