GOST Field Campaign in Tauranga, New Zealand, February and March, 2012

The recent interest in the dredging of Tauranga Harbour to widen and deepen the shipping channel to accommodate larger vessels up to 7000 TEUs (Twenty feet Equivalent Units) has provided the impetus to perform sediment stratigraphy and characterization of the area. Following a large storm during May 2005, a number of landslides occurred across the Tauranga basin region specifically in the suburb of Otumoetai. Sensitive layers which are associated with volcanic ash materials, which have subsequently weathered to soil and have high clay content, were responsible for the slope failure.

PhD Student Ruggero Capperucci Attends GeoHab 2012 in Orcas Island, USA

GeoHab is an international community of geo- and bio-scientists founded in 2001 with the goals of improving the exchange of experiences and increasing the connectivity between experts dealing with habitat mapping. Since 2001, the conference has been held every year in a different continent (often in a different hemisphere!).

New Zealand INTERCOAST Student Alex Port Investigates the Sea Lettuce Blooms in Tauranga Harbour, New Zealand

Alex Port is currently researching the problem of sea lettuce blooms in Tauranga Harbour, New Zealand. His work has created some interest in the local community who have to deal with the aftermath of the blooms when large amounts of the algae wash up on the beaches and begin to decay. Alex was recently profiled on the Waikato University News webpage to get the word out that help is on the way!

INTERCOAST Workshop/Retreat on Oil Exploration in the Wadden Sea National Park

The INTERCOAST PhD students have recently participated in an interdisciplinary workshop on the topic of oil exploration in the Wadden Sea National Park. The workshop took place in Dornumersiel, near the National Park, on April 2-3, 2012.

PhD Student Dorothea Kohlmeier Attends the 50th Meeting of the Estuarine and Coastal Sciences Association (ECSA) in Venice, Italy

From the 3rd to 7th of June 2012, the 50th meeting of the Estuarine and Coastal Sciences Association (ECSA) took place in Venice, Italy. The conference was organized in partnership with Elsevier and its Journal “Estuarine and Coastal Shelf Science” and was entitled “Today’s Science for Tomorrow’s Management”.

The 3rd Annual INTERCOAST Workshop took place in Bremen, Germany

The much anticipated annual INTERCOAST workshop was successfully held from June 16 – June 23, 2012, at the MARUM Institute of University of Bremen in Germany. The annual IC workshops provide an opportunity for project leaders (supervisors) and PhD students alike to come together to reflect on past, present, and future research in the framework of the INTERCOAST programme.

PhD Student Gerhard Bartzke Attends the 6th Conference on Environmental Science and Technology (EST) in Houston, Texas, USA and the 33rd International Conference on Coastal Engineering, ICCE 2012 in Santander, Spain

The 6th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology (EST) took place at the Hilton Convenience Center in Houston from June 25-29, 2012. The objective of the EST 2012 was to provide a major interdisciplinary forum for presenting new approaches from relevant areas of environmental science and engineering and to foster integration of the latest developments in scientific research into engineering applications.

INTERCOAST PhD Students Clarisse Niemand and Rachel Harris Take in the Sights and Sounds While Expanding Their Scientific Horizons During Their Research Stay in Germany

During our time at the Senckenberg Institute, we were able to participate in a few educational events and research cruises with colleagues from the Marine Biology group, as well as the Sedimentology and Actuopalaeontology groups. While always learning about Wadden Sea ecology, the collaborations between working groups allowed us a broader perspective through exposure to a diverse range of research areas.

Best Student Paper Award For PhD Student Ruggero Capperucci At Hydro'12 Conference - Rotterdam, 12-16 November 2012

More than 400 participants from 5 continents took part in the 21st Hydro’ Conference organized by the Hydrographic Society Benelux (Rotterdam, The Netherlands, 12-16 November 2012). The theme of the conference, “Taking care of the sea”, aimed to improve the exchange of knowledge and experience about hydrographic solutions, new techniques, and scientific approaches to better address the future marine challenges, which also involve such societal aspects as climate change, costal development, tourism, and international trade.

Phase II of the INTERCOAST Research Programme Has Begun With 13 New PhD Students On The University Of Bremen Side

Starting on December 1, 2012, 13 new PhD projects commenced within the INTERCOAST programme at University of Bremen.
This second cohort of PhD students will carry on with similar or related research in the already existing research projects of their predecessors from the first phase of studies.

INTERCOAST PhD Student Friederike Gesing Joins Science, Technology, and Society Program At Harvard

Frieda Gesing has recently taken up a fellowship in the Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Program at the Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she will stay until May 2013. The program includes the participation of, currently, 12 pre- and post-doctoral fellows from different academic and institutional backgrounds who are working on different projects within the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS). The program is directed by Prof. Sheila Jasanoff, a significant contributor to the study of science and technology within society, politics, and culture, and former chair of the STS Department at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Within the program, there are three educational forums: a seminar given by Prof. Jasanoff on Science, Power, and Politics; a weekly Fellows’ Group meeting; and a weekly STS Circle with visiting scholars. Apart from Frieda’s participation in the STS program, she is also taking part in an Anthropology graduate class on the Politics of Nature taught by Ajantha Subramanian, and is additionally attending many other exciting academic events, such as frequent lectures by visiting researchers at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
 

INTERCOAST PhD Student Firoz Badesab Successfully Defended His Thesis on December 13, 2012
