Christopher Daly presented his research in ICCE in Shanghai, China

China has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. It is home to the world’s largest deepwater port in the economic centre of Shanghai. Increasing levels of shipping activity, increased population growth at coastal cities and potential climate change scenarios means that coastal areas of China are under increasing stress. As such, the Chinese Ocean Engineering Society sought to host the 32nd International Conference on Coastal Engineering (ICCE) in Shanghai, China.

The ICCE is one of the most recognized conferences for coastal engineers, managers and scientists. The conference took place at the Shanghai International Convention Centre between June 30 and July 5, 2010 (opening ceremony pictured above). Over 440 papers and over 50 posters were presented in 5 parallel sessions throughout the 6 day period.

IC1 PhD, Christopher Daly (pictured above), attended the ICCE and presented results from his M.Sc. research which focused on wave breaking schematization effects on low frequency waves. The presentation was well received. A number of notable experts in the different fields of coastal engineering and science also gave talks. Technical tours were organized which included a tour of the Shanghai Deepwater Port (pictured to the left), access to the 2010 World Fair and a tour of the River Training Project in the Yangtze Estuary. The closing banquet of the conference featured traditional Chinese Opera performances, which charmed the attendees.

The ICCE presents the opportunity for open discussions with other colleagues from around the world in the field of coastal engineering. Knowledge sharing, network building and creating international partnerships between research groups is something which Christopher has certainly benefitted from during this experience. Also, Christopher found some time to visit some of China’s historic sites. The ICCE is held every two years. The next ICCE will be in Santander, Spain 1 – 6 July 2012. Abstracts must be received before 1 October 2011.
