Gornostakh antecline, Yakutia

The Gornostakh antecline, a ca. 2 hour helicopter ride east of Yakutsk, hosts a remarkable thick sequence of Riphean and Vendian (i.e. Meso- to Neoproterozoic) sediments that record three large transgressive cycles and contain the famous Lakhanda Lagerstätte. This extensive sampling campaign required much logistic effort—after the remote drop-off we had to paddle/float for 2 weeks until we reached the Aldan River, from where we could take a boat back to Yakutsk. The completeness of this sediment package and it's overal organic richness made it a prime target for a variety of geobiological studies.
