Report of GLOMAR PhD student Yancheng Zhang about his participation in the XIX INQUA Congress in Nagoya, Japan from 26 July - 2 August 2015

With the financial support from GLOMAR, I attended the XIX INQUA congress that included 118 sessions covering a wide range of scientific fields and attracted about 1, 800 researchers from all over the world to present their results or/and progresses across various disciplines of quaternary science in Nagoya, Japan from 26 July - 2 August 2015. Despite the large number of participants, the conference was well-organized and its tight schedule filled in all full days. The academic environment there also allowed me to have deep discussions with many experts and young scientists.

At the current stage, my PhD aims to further investigate the South American climate system in response to the Heinrich Stadial 1, a period between 18 and 15 thousand years ago, during which the precipitation regime over South America was completely different. I presented the result as a poster at the conference, which obtained attentions from other paleoclimatologists who use pollen data or/and geochemical proxies to reconstruct past climate changes in South America. Moreover, they were very pleased to contribute some data to this study which would greatly fill the existing gap in the compilation of pelaodata in my manuscript.

During the conference, I also communicated with others, who work on the geochemistry of marine sediment cores in Pacific or/and speleothems in tropic region, to facilitate my PhD for the next step. The extensive discussions with experts, postdoc or/and PhD researchers in such fields were indeed quite fruitful. The interesting results from their sides, which will probably be published in the coming months, enable me to incorporate these data into a new manuscript later on. The conference was also a great opportunity to network with research communities from different countries, e.g. Japan, French, Germany, Finland, Sweden, USA and China.

I sincerely thank GLOMAR for funding my trip to the XIX INQUA conference which I feel greatly benefited both my scientific knowledge and experience.
