Report of GLOMAR PhD student Xueqin Zhao about her participation in the EGU General Assembly 2017 in Vienna, Austria from 23 to 28 April 2017

The EGU General Assembly 2017, was held from 23 to 28 April 2017 in Vienna, Austria.

It was a joint meeting of different fields comprising all disciplines of earth, planetary and space sciences, which brought together geoscientists from all over the world to one meeting. This year, there were totally 4849 oral, 11312 poster and 1238 PICO presentations with 14496 scientists from 107 countries in attendance. This offered a great opportunity for interacting with other scientists, not only within the same fields but also the other fields I am interested in.

The EGU General Assembly 2017 gave especially the early career scientists a unique motivated and friendly atmosphere to present their work with various meetings, sessions and short courses. I was given the chance to present my PhD work as a poster presentation entitled “Holocene climate variability and oceanographic changes off western South Africa”. My poster was presented in the sub session “Past climate – isotopic and multi-proxy continental and shallow marine records”. This gave me a chance to discuss my data with others who are interested in my topic and receive valuable comments, which will be very helpful for my further work. At the first day of the conference (24 April), I attended a session “How to navigate EGU: Tipps & tricks” which was very helpful for me to learn how to survive in such a big conference. The great thing was to listen to a variety of lectures given by the medalist by whom I was highly inspired. In this conference, I also mainly focused on the climate model which I find very interesting and really want to apply it into my work in the future. There was also enough time for me to visit other posters and get to know about various topics which were very interesting during the coffee breaks and poster sessions.

In summary, taking the conference was a great experience for me as the first big international conference I have had during my PhD. Therefore, I would like to thank GLOMAR for their financial support which enabled me to attend the conference. This gave me a great opportunity to meet scientists from different fields and broad my scientific network.
