Rony Küchler

Report of GLOMAR PhD student Rony Küchler about his participation in the 26th International Meeting on Organic Geochemistry (IMOG 2013), Tenerife, Spain, 15 – 20 September 2013

The International Meeting on Organic Geochemistry (IMOG) is the official biennial conference of the European Association of Organic Geochemists (EAOG). This year, the 26th IMOG took place in the modern event center Magma Arte & Congresos in Costa Adeje, Tenerife, gathering more than 600 participants from all over the world with more than 90 oral and 400 poster presentations.

In general, oral sessions were arranged in two parallel sequences: One sessions string was covering all aspects of Petroleum Geochemistry, the other one all other topics like Paleoclimate, water column studies or methane cycling. In this way, all talks related to one‘s own work field could be attended. Posters were displayed for two days, giving enough time for inspections and discussions. My contribution entitled “NW African plant-wax signals during the Pliocene” was scheduled for Poster Session Paleoenvironments II. Overall, the feedback to my work was good, with some experts giving valuable comments and suggestions. Besides a lot of interesting talks and posters presented during the conference, I also benefited from the social program, which gave further opportunities for open discussions in a comfortable environment, but also for an informal “screening“ for potential post-doc or other positions.

To conclude, I really enjoyed the attendance of this year’s IMOG, as it constitutes one of the most important frameworks for organic geochemists to get together and exchange research results and ideas. Like two years ago, when I presented my first results at this conference, I was happy to meet many familiar colleagues again, as well as to become acquainted with new contacts. Finally, I want to thank GLOMAR for the financial support of this conference trip.
