Report of GLOMAR PhD student Riza Setiawan about his participation in the International Conference on Paleoceanography, Barcelona, Spain, 1 – 6 September 2013

Every three years since 1983, the paleoceanographic community comes together to share new discoveries and celebrate their discipline at the International Conference on Paleoceanography (ICP). At this time, the 11th ICP took place in Sitges, Barcelona, Spain from 1-6 September 2013. The chosen topic for ICP11 was: Long-term perspectives on ocean and climate dynamics - Three decades of ICP.

There were 5 lecture sessions during the conference and each session presented very interesting issues. However, my favorite sessions were Session 1: Reading the paleo-record: From proxy development to application, Session 2: Extending the instrumental record into the paleo-world, and Session 5: Continent-ocean interactions. Because of those three are closely related to my research interests as well as my PhD project.

At this conference I presented a poster entitled ‘The impact of the Java Sea flooding on the regional hydrology of the Maritime Continent’. I received very positive feedback on my current results from several leading scientists, such as 'the Godfather' of Neodymium Prof. Martin Frank (GEOMAR, Kiel) and Dr. Tina van De Flierdt (Imperial College London). Moreover, Prof. Martin Frank offered me an opportunity for conducting further analyses on planktonic foraminifera Neodymium in his laboratory.

I thoroughly enjoyed the entire conference and it was an amazing experience. I have met and interacted with hundreds of international students and scientists. I would like to sincerely thank GLOMAR for supporting my participation in this ICP11 event. This conference is greatly enhanced my knowledge and networking.
