Report of GLOMAR PhD student Kei Matsuyama about his participation in the 12th Larwood Symposium, Sopot, Poland, 12 - 13 June 2014

I am very thankful for the GLOMAR support which enabled me to attend the 12th Larwood Symposium at the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot from June 12th to 13th, 2014.

The Larwood Symposium is a short meeting of bryozoologists, mainly from Europe, covering the gap between the triennial international conferences of the International Bryozoology Association (IBA). It started as an informal one-day meeting for british bryozoologists, but eventually attracted also scientists from other countries. These conferences cover all aspects of current research in bryozoology and aim particularly at bringing together students and established researchers, leading to a vivid scientific exchange. Topics covered in these conferences include biodiversity, taxonomy, phylogeny, anatomy, biochemistry, biogeochemistry, (paleo)biogeography, (paleo)ecology and also new methodological approaches, which were all represented this time.

I had the opportunity to present first results of my PhD project in a talk entitled: “Biodiversity of the Cold-water Coral-associated Bryozoan Fauna from Mauritania”, which led to a stimulating exchange of thoughts with experts on different fields and also a lot of suggestions and hints regarding different aspects of my project. The various other talks and posters increased my knowledge on bryozoans in general and kept me up-to-date in bryozoology, as the most recent developments and also ideas for future research were presented.

I enjoyed the informal atmosphere of this very well organized meeting, the intense scientific exchange during the day but also the social events in the evening, where discussion about bryozoans still continued. The experience of meeting other researchers from my field, both established scientists and other PhD students, was a very pleasant one and I am sure that I have profited a lot from attending this meeting.
