Report of GLOMAR PhD student Katja Hockun about her participation in the 26th International Meeting on Organic Geochemistry (IMOG 2013), Tenerife, Spain, 15 – 20 September 2013

The IMOG is held every two years and the official conference of the European Association of Organic Geochemists (EAOG). It is the largest meeting on Organic Geochemistry. More than 500 participants from all over the world with 86 oral and up to 500 poster presentations attended to the IMOG. In addition a number of specific workshops and an exhibition of products and services have been organized. The IMOG meetings became an important forum where recent research results are presented and discussed in academia and industry in the fields of Organic Geochemistry with topics ranging from Biogeochemistry to Petroleum Geochemistry.

Every day there were plenary sessions in the morning given by invited speakers on highlight topics. These were followed by parallel sessions of oral presentations. During the five days of conference a diverse range of topics have been presented including paleoclimate, paleohydrology, water column studies, soil biogeochemistry, benthic processes, analytical methods, methane cycle, earth and life history.

On Thursday I had the chance to present results of my PhD project during the poster session in paleoclimate II. My poster was entitled: “Paleoenvirnmental reconstruction in southern Patagonia based on lipid D/H compositions”. During the two, one and a half hour, poster sessions I had the opportunity to talk about my results and speak to leading scientists in that field of research. In this regard I got a lot of input which will help me to develop ideas. My manuscript which I am currently writing will benefit from those.

Participating in the IMOG 2013 allowed me to strengthen my scientific network; learn about new approaches in biogeochemistry; and improve my own research. I am very grateful to GLOMAR whose financial support allowed me to participate in this meeting.
