Report of GLOMAR PhD student Holger Kühnhold about his participation in the Aquaculture Conference in Montpellier, France from 23 - 26 August 2015

I am PhD student at the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT). In my PhD project I am establishing energetic and biochemical biomarkers for sea cucumbers to assess the effect of thermal stress in these organisms. Sea cucumbers are globally a luxury food commodity, and hence are of high aquaculture interest. Therefore, I decided to submit an abstract at the conference `Aquaculture 2015´ in Montepellier, France, for an oral presentation, in the session `Novel approaches in experimental biology and physiology to enhance aquaculture sustainability´.

My abstract was approved and thanks to the generous funding from GLOMAR, I was able to travel to France and attend this conference in August 2015. The journal publisher Elsivier organized this event, in close cooperation with the European (EAS)- and the World Aquaculture Society (WAS). Thus, it was a prestigious conference attended by 300 guests coming from 65 nations. The three days conference comprised 12 talks by invited key note speakers, 12 oral sessions and 3 poster sessions. In between these proceedings, there were lots of opportunities to network with other researchers and people from the industry.

Holding a presentation at this event and defending my results in front of senior researchers from all over the world, was a great experience for me. Moreover, Elsevier offered me a special slot to publish my data in the journal Elsevier Aquaculture.
