Report of GLOMAR PhD student Gopika Suresh about her participation in the IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, Melbourne, Australia, 21 – 26 July 2013

On July 18, 2013, I was all packed and ready to embark on a 24 hour journey, across 8 time zones, to present my PhD research at one of the most prestigious conferences in the remote sensing community, the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics engineers) Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS). Sponsored by the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, this conference has become an international focal point for remote sensing programs and activities and brings together hundreds of scientists, engineers, and students from around the world. It provides a platform to discuss the latest techniques, methods, models and applications relevant to the remote sensing community. Since Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors are widely used in remote sensing, a significant part of the conference revolves around the techniques used in SAR data processing and analysis, and the latest applications and results of SAR related research. As a PhD student who works with SAR data, this conference was 'the place' to present my research and results.

Thanks to GLOMAR, I was able to attend this esteemed conference and present my PhD work for the first time on such a global scale. This conference provided the opportunity to personally meet some of the most established and acknowledged members of the SAR community, most of whom I have referenced and cited at some point or the other during my PhD. Just like any other conference, this conference too had tonnes of presentations during the day and poster sessions in the evening. The presentations that I attended provided insights into the latest techniques used in oil-spill detection and also made me aware of other research institutes working in my field. When the day of my own poster session came, I was pleased to see a lot of interest in my work. I also found it very re-assuring to receive positive responses to my work, and the discussions and suggestions during the poster session have helped me define the next objectives in my PhD. Bumping into ex-colleagues and friends from across the country and globe also felt great.

I felt very privileged to have been given the honour of presenting and discussing my research with some of the most acknowledged names in the remote sensing community. The knowledge I have gained from the conference and the suggestions that I have received have helped stream-line my PhD. Melbourne was a joy to explore as there is so much to see and experience. I even had the unique opportunity to meet and interact with Kangaroos and Koalas. For this unforgettable experience, I have GLOMAR to thank.
