Report of GLOMAR PhD student Frederike Wilckens about her participation in the Goldschmidt 2015 Conference in Prague, Czech Republic from 16 - 21 August 2015
The Goldschmidt conference is the biggest geochemical conference worldwide. Goldschmidt 2015 took place from August, 16 – 21 in Prague. This year was the 25th anniversary of Goldschmidt conference covering 25 different themes with almost 200 independent sessions. Due to its anniversary there were also a lot of anniversary talks about major advances made during the last 25 years.
This conference was the first big conference I attended and I was really surprised how fruitful it was. I got the chance to introduce myself to many people and listened to many interesting talks. In particular, I was interested in sessions concerning continental weathering and its inputs into the ocean as well as alteration of oceanic crust and hydrothermal circulation but I also broadened my knowledge in different topics like mantle dynamics or human health applications. In the session “Petrology of the Ocean Crust: Creation, Alteration, and Subduction” I presented first results of my PhD project in form of a talk (Title: Boron and lithium isotope compositions of acid-sulfate fluids from the Eastern Manus Basin, Papua New Guinea). In addition, I presented my Master project in form of a poster. Both poster and talk gave me the opportunity to present myself to the scientific community. I had the chance to meet many senior scientists and other PhD students and discuss my results and interpretations with them. For both talk and poster I got an overall good feedback and new ideas for my manuscripts.
In total the conference was an amazing time for me and I did benefit a lot from it. Besides the conference Prague is a beautiful city and I took some time to visit the old town and meet in the evening with friends from my old department.
I would like to thank MARUM for the financial support of my project, which made it possible to take part in this conference.
