Report of GLOMAR PhD student Claudia Färber about her participation in the GeoFrankfurt2014 conference, Frankfurt a.M, Germany, 21 - 24 September 2014

The GeoFrankfurt 2014 conference, Earth System Dynamics, was a joint meeting of Deutsche Geophysikalische Gesellschaft (DGG), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geowissenschaften (DGG), Geologische Vereinigung (GV), Paläontologische Gesellschaft (PalGes), SEPM CES and Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN). The conference was hosted by the Goethe University in Frankfurt a.M. from 21-24 September 2014. The different fields of the joining societies resulted in a wide spectrum of geoscientific disciplines ranging from the earth core to surface processes that were organized in 8 parallel sessions and 2 poster socials. In total, about 700 participants were present contributing with about 200 talks and 200 posters.

For me, investigating within the scope of my PhD project the spatio-temporal development of carbonate bioerosion in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, the session “Carbonate systems: recorders of environmental change” was highly relevant. The focus of this session was set on the impact of earth system dynamics on carbonate settings and depositional environments from continental to deep marine settings, spanning all ranges of latitude and age. The session was convened by Prof. Dr. Eberhard Gischler (Frankfurt a.M.), Prof. Dr. Thomas Brachert (Leipzig) and Prof. Dr. Christian Betzler (Hamburg) and comprised in total 2 keynote talks, 7 talks and 8 poster presentations.

My contribution to the session was the talk “Integrating short- and long-term bioerosion processes in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea”, which main focus was set on preliminary results from the microcomputer tomographic analysis of macrobioerosion traces and rates in marble blocks that were deployed for 1-14 years around Rhodes (Greece). To give this talk gave me the opportunity to present my research field to a broader audience of carbonate sedimentologists and to discuss my results with colleagues working in similar research fields.

Furthermore, the interdisciplinary program of the conference contained many interesting talks, keynote presentations, an evening lecture, and posters presentations.

I would like to thank GLOMAR for the financial support to attend the GeoFrankfurt 2014 conference, which allowed me to increase my visibility in the scientific community, to expand my scientific network and to learn more about the latest research in geosciences.
