Report of GLOMAR PhD student Célia Santos about her participation in the AGU Fall Meeting, San Francisco, USA, 15 - 19 December 2014

The Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) took place from 15 to 19 December 2014 in San Francisco, USA. This large international event, which gathered nearly 25 000 participants, allowed the discussion of the latest advances, challenges and emerging trends in Earth and space sciences. The week was filled with ground-breaking and informative presentations (orals and posters sessions), lectures, workshops and social events.

I attended the AGU Fall Meeting for the first time, and I was mostly focused on the sessions covering productivity proxies, carbon and silica biogeochemical cycle, molecular biomarkers and different aspects of climate change and variability. Before the beginning of the conference, I also joined the IODP Primer course: An Introduction to the Ocean Drilling Programs, held in San Francisco at 14 December 2014. This short course mainly provided an overview about the history of ocean drilling, how to access the archives (cores, samples and data), how to apply to sail on IODP expeditions and funding IODP-related research.

My poster presentation entitled “Diatom Seasonal Abundance, Assemblages and Lipid Biomarkers: Towards a More Robust Reconstruction of Diatom Paleoproductivity ”, took place at 15 December 2014, under the scope of the session “Productivity Proxies: New Developments and Records II”. I had the opportunity to discuss my PhD results with experts and other interested scientists, and benefited from valuable comments and suggestions.

Overall, joining this meeting allowed me to gain new insights and updates on the climate, ocean and biogeosciences, to learn more from leading scientific experts, and to improve my own research. The fruitful discussions and networking with peers and colleagues enhanced my professional development. I am thankful to GLOMAR whose financial support allowed me to participate in this meeting.
