Report of GLOMAR PhD student Benjamin Baasch about his participation in the 75th EAGE Conference & Exhibition, London, UK, 10 - 13 June 2013

The 75th EAGE Conference & Exhibition incorporating SPE EUROPEC 2013 was hosted in London. More than 1100 poster and oral presentations and about 6,000 visitors from almost 100 different countries attended the event. Most of the conference presentations were related to the geophysical exploration of oil and gas. Besides the technical program latest developments in geophysics, geology and reservoir/petroleum engineering were presented on a large exhibition with around 350 exhibitors.

I had the chance to present my latest work on a poster with the title “Reconstruction of Magnetic Susceptibility and Electric Conductivity from Marine Small-loop EMI Data” in the Non-seismic Geophysics session. This paper describes the technical development in processing of marine near-surface electromagnetic data and shows field data acquired on the NW Iberian shelf. Two other poster sessions and two oral sessions were devoted to electromagnetic methods and hence were of spatial interest to me. Around these sessions I had the possibility to meet commercial and academic professionals with whom I could discuss future trends in marine electromagnetic techniques.

Additionally to the main conference program the EAGE offered an extensive student programme with many activities. Thus, I took the chance to participate in a trial interview, which was a great experience and will help me for my further carrier.

I can highly recommend this conference to people working with geophysical data especially to those working with seismic methods and to MSc/PhD students who will graduate in the near future and are looking for a job in industry.

Last but not least, I would like to thank GLOMAR for the financial support offering me the opportunity to attend this conference.
