Report of GLOMAR PhD student Antje Buss about her participation in the IAHS - IAPSO - IASPEI Joint Assembly 2013, Gothenburg, Sweden, 22 – 26 July 2013

The IAHS - IAPSO - IASPEI Joint Assembly 2013 was held in Gothenburg from the 22nd to the 26th of July. The assembly provided a forum where about 1000 participating scientists from all over the world and within different geophysical disciplines met. Thanks to the support of GLOMAR I was able to attend this Joint Assembly and give a talk, entitled “Upwelling the Weddell Sea” within the session “Investigating the Southern Ocean - what we have learnt 5 years from IPY”. After my talk, I had the possibility to discuss my first results as well as the method I am using during my Ph.D. project to calculate upwelling velocities with other scientists working in the Southern Ocean. By attending other oral and poster presentations from the Southern Ocean session I learned more about recent and ongoing studies of the region I am working in while the other sessions organised by the International Association for the Physical Science of the Ocean (IAPSO) I attended were very useful to provide an overview of ongoing research in other oceanographic research areas as well as broaden my oceanographic knowledge.

I would like to thank GLOMAR a lot for providing the funding which gave me the possibility to attend the IAHS - IAPSO - IASPEI Joint Assembly. This conference was a great benefit for my ongoing research and helped me establishing a network in the oceanographic community.
