Report of GLOMAR PhD student Andreia Rebotim about her participation in the International Conference on Paleoceanography, Barcelona, Spain, 1 – 6 September 2013

Attending to the International Conference on Paleoceanography (ICP), this year with the title “Long-term perspectives on ocean and climate dynamics – Three decades of ICP” (http://www.icp2013.cat/), was a great chance to get information about the latest discoveries, the emerging new areas and the current state of knowledge in paleoceanography. In total there were around 500 participants from all different places, different backgrounds and different work experiences.

The conference was organised along five broad session themes, each day with a different session. The days were divided in oral presentations by invited scientists in the mornings and extensive poster sessions in the afternoons. In addition, there was also various social events, like the Paleomusicology concert.

During the oral sessions there were some inspiring lectures that gave me a general idea of what is being done more recently in the paleocenographic community. Over the poster sessions I had the opportunity to discuss with other scientists and students about their own work in a very friendly environment. Among the connections that I have established, there is a perspective to collaborate with one of them in a near future. I had the opportunity to present a poster with my PhD first results within the Session 1: “Reading the paleo-record: From proxy development to application”. It was very helpful to get some comments and suggestions on my work. It is very motivating to see that your own work is interesting for others.

Since this is a tri-annual meeting, this was a unique opportunity to have some feedback on my research work, increase my network connections and learn a lot. I would like to give a big thank you to GLOMAR for providing me the financial funding and allowing me to have this great opportunity.
