Influence of Ocean Currents in Deep Marine Sedimentation in the Patagonian Continental Margin (South-western Atlantic Ocean) and Paleoceanographic Reconstruction

The Argentina Continental Margin (Southwestern Atlantic Ocean) is an important region of the world ocean in terms of global oceanographic and climate interaction, where water masses from the Antarctic and the Equator interact in the mid-latitudes, resulting in net meridional heat transport between the Southern Pole and the Equator. Consequently, the physically, oceanographically, and climatically driven processes have produced distinct and unique morpho-sedimentary features in the region, which define the whole record of the processes involved in its evolution. Those characteristic features have different types of proxies which provide valuable qualitative and quantitative evidence for detailed paleoclimatic, paleoenvironmental, and palaeoceanographic reconstruction. So, the Argentinean margin potentially acts as a complete archive for interpretation of the unique climatic and oceanographic characteristics that happen in the region and impact the southern hemisphere.

The present research aims to comprehend the impact of ocean currents on deep marine sedimentation and Paleoreconstruction of the position of ocean currents i.e.  Brazil-Malvinas Confluence zone using the multi-disciplinary methodologies of sedimentology, palaeoceanography, and geochemistry. With the help of this research, sedimentology and palaeoceanographic reconstruction in the southern hemisphere will be improved by understanding the evolution of the mixed turbidites contourite system and the influence of ocean currents in deep marine sedimentation in the SW Atlantic Ocean.
