PhD Project

Gender, tourism, and climate adaptation in coastal Kenya

My research is about climate change adaptation in the context of coastal and ocean based tourism. The study will compare adaptation knowledge of policy makers in formal government institutions with that of local tourism-dependent coastal communities in Kenya, and incorporate a gender component in the analysis. By involving diverse actors in adaptation planning, the study assumes that responsive policies and increased resilience for affected groups can be achieved.

The research will span four years (2021-2025) and employ methods such as policy document reviews, photo voicing, and fuzzy cognitive mapping. These approaches will explore the collective understanding of climate adaptation among tourism-dependent coastal communities and identify knowledge gaps or mismatches with policy makers.

Given the vulnerability of coastal areas to climate change and the high tourism activity in these regions, it is important to understand how the direct experiences and knowledge of local communities’ complement formal policy knowledge. I hope findings from my research can help inform effective adaptation strategies and prevent maladaptation in the future.
