PhD Project
Enzymatic Degradation of Polysaccharides from marine Diatoms
In my PhD thesis I will investigate the degradation of polysaccharides from marine diatoms.
Marine diatoms account for up to 40% of marine primary production and 20% of global carbon fixation and are thus a major factor in the marine carbon cycle. An enormous variation of proteins and genes involved in polysaccharide degradation have been identified in metagenomic and metaproteomic studies in the past years. The biochemical investigation of the proteins responsible for the degradation of polysaccharides reveals more and more families involved in this process. The proteogenomic analysis and the biochemical investigation are therefore strongly dependent on each other.
The DfG-founded project Proteogenomics of Marine Polysaccharide Utilization (POMPU) gathers researchers to shed more light on this end of the marine carbon cycle. As part of this project I will be involved in the biochemical analysis of marine polysaccharide utilization.
