Climate development in the Pliocene to Holocene in the Red Sea

The Red Sea records the climate dynamics of the Pleistocene to the present in a complex way. The monsoon intensity in the larger area is reflected in fluvial versus eolian sediments, while the local marine climate is recorded in calcifying biota, whereby the latter is also influenced by sea-level fluctuations steering the exchange of seawater with the Indian Ocean. Here we study those climate records from marine sediment cores by focusing on dust, coccoliths, and benthic and planktic foraminifers.
