The genomic basis of a reef fish radiation
Color pattern is a striking feature that can evolve rapidly under the effect of natural and sexual selection.Nevertheless, the genomic basis of this complex trait and its role in fundamental evolutionary processes such as speciation or radiation is unknown for the vast majority of animals. The hamlets, a group of reef fishes from the wider Caribbean, present a promising model system to address this question. The hamlets radiated into 18 species that are very closely related genetically and differ essentially in terms of color pattern. I will leverage the chromosome-resolution reference genome for the hamlets to characterize the genomic bases of color pattern diversification in this group.
