GLOMAR Hot-Topic Panel Discussion on “Deep-sea mining”

18 February 2014
Deep-sea mining is the process of mineral extraction in the deep sea, i.e. from or near the ocean floor. Deep-sea minerals include manganese nodules, cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts and hydrothermal polymetallic sulphides. While the development of new technologies seems to offer a solution to meet the growing demand for minerals on the global market, the potential impact of deep-sea mining on the environment and on society is poorly understood with yet to be quantified uncertainties.

In the GLOMAR Panel Discussion, we assigned PhD students the roles of 5 participants representing different opinions and backgrounds discussing the topic and being chaired by a moderator.

All panellists lively engaged in the discussion and presented their points and arguments in a highly professional and entertaining way. The moderator solicited questions and invited audience participation in the discussion. Audience questions were directed to the individual characters in general terms covering topics ranging from the various steps in the mining process.

By taking up roles that possibly did not cover their own opinion, the panellists practiced how to put themselves in the position of somebody else – a key competence when dealing with hot topics.
