Report of Guest PhD student Sanjukta De about her research placement at MARUM from August - November 2015

The GLOMAR research placement has made it possible for me to carry out a sediment magnetic research project at the Marine Geophysics Group under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Tilo von Dobeneck. I am currently a Ph.D. student at the Department of Geological Sciences of Jadavpur University, India and my doctoral research project is at its formative stage. The research experience obtained at Bremen will help me in formulating and better shaping my future doctoral research work.

My guest project was to establish a routine laboratory protocol combining wet sieving with heavy liquid fractionation and subsequent rock magnetic and petrological analyses to identify factors for magnetic mineral enrichment in coastal sediments. My exemplary samples were from the Fehmarn Belt, Germany, and from the coast of Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Susceptibility measurements of each grain-size and density fraction of the samples will be used to ascertain relevant magnetic/heavy mineral partitioning processes by identifying magnetically enriched and depleted grain-size and density fractions.

Accompanying petrological studies helped to determine if magnetic grains are present as single particles or as inclusions in silicate matrix or lithic fragments. Of particular interest are fines which show much higher magnetic susceptibilities than the other fractions and may be gravitationally enriched in the voids of larger matrix-forming particles. These characteristics, along with knowledge on sediment dynamic conditions at the sampling locations, will help to better understanding the nature of sedimentary magnetite enrichment processes.

I would like to express my deep sense of gratitude to Prof. Dr. Tilo von Dobeneck for his valuable guidance and support. I also acknowledge valuable support from two Ph.D. students, Benny Halstenberg and Tobias Kulgemeyer, and the technicians of this group. I am grateful to GLOMAR for financial support and for allowing me to take part in various graduate courses. I had the opportunity to join the GLOMAR research theme B (Ocean and Seafloor) and attended the monthly research seminars. Being a part of this group, I have gained useful knowledge by interacting with other Ph.D. candidates. The chosen time frame to work on this project has also provided me the opportunity to attend the INTERCOAST-2015 workshop. With my three months stay at Bremen, I am not just enriched with scientific work knowledge but also experienced the cultural and societal environment of Bremen.

With this opportunity, I have got the exposure to work on a broader international platform and gained a very fruitful research experience by working close together with experts in my research area.
