Report of GLOMAR PhD student Xueqin Zhao about her participation in the GeoFrankfurt2014 conference, Frankfurt a.M, Germany, 21 - 24 September 2014

The GeoFrankfurt 2014, Earth Systems Dynamics, was held from 21 to 24 September 2014 in Goethe University, Frankfurt a.M.

It was a joint meeting of different fields comprising a wide spectrum of geoscientific disciplines ranging from the earth’s core to its surface. There were totally four topics (Dynamics of the Earth’s Surface; Dynamics of the Solid Earth; Management of the Earth’s Systems; Open Session and Regional Geology) including 50 sub-sessions, gathering around 700 participants contributing 250 oral presentations and 200 posters. This offered a great opportunity for interacting with other scientists, not only within the same fields but also the other fields I am interested in.

The GeoFrankfurt 2014 gave especially the young scientists a unique motivated and friendly atmosphere to present their work. I was given the chance to present first results of my PhD project as a poster presentation entitled “Holocene vegetation and climate variability between winter and summer rainfall zones of South Africa”. My poster was presented in the sub-session “Marine and lacustrine sediments as environmental archives”. This gave me a chance to discuss my data with others who are interested in my topic and receive valuable comments, which will be very helpful for my first manuscript. The great thing was to listen to a variety of topics in paleoenvironment, which would arouse my own ideas for my PhD project. There was also enough time for me to visit other posters and get to know about various topics which were very interesting during the coffee breaks and poster sessions.

In summary, taking the conference was a great experience for me as the first conference I have had during my PhD. Therefore, I would like to thank GLOMAR for their financial support which enabled me to attend the conference. This gave me a great opportunity to meet scientists from different fields and broad my scientific network.
