Report of GLOMAR PhD student Thomas Mann about his participation in the ISC (International Sedimentological Congress), Geneva, Switzerland, 18 - 22 August 2014

The International Sedimentological Congress (ISC) is held only once every four years. Accordingly, it belongs to the most important scientific meetings with a focus on sedimentology and stratigraphy. This years meeting was conducted in beautiful Geneva, Switzerland and had a convenient size with a few hundred participants. The congress itself took place at one of the main buildings of the University of Geneva and international experts from all fields of sedimentology were present. The relatively small size of the meeting enabled the ready establishment of contacts.

The sessions covered all areas from deep-time to recent and from applied to basic research. Furthermore, the scientific program included four invited plenary lectures that comprised different aspects of sedimentology including sea-level rise and extra-terrestrial analogies. I presented a poster entitled “Reconstructing past sea level in the Spermonde Archipelago, SW Sulawesi, Indonesia” in the session “Carbonate platforms” on the second day of the conference. In my Ph.D. project, I examine the influence of sea-level changes on reef island evolution in this area of the world. The poster was frequently visited and I learnt to know other workers that apply the same methodologies in another areas. We had some fruitful discussions about potential influences on sea-level changes and how to deal with uncertainty in the reconstruction. I am convinced that our work will considerably benefit from my participation in the ISC in Geneva.

Many thanks are due to GLOMAR for their financial support that enabled me to attend at this conference.
