Thomas Lorscheid

Report of GLOMAR PhD student Thomas Lorscheid about his participation in the European Geoscience Union (EGU) General Assembly in Vienna, Austria from 12 - 17 April 2015

The EGU General Assembly is one of the biggest conferences for geosciences in Europe, held every year in Vienna. Over five days numerous sessions cover nearly all topics across the geosciences. In 2015, the General Assembly took place from the 12th to the 17th of April in the Austria Center Vienna. Approximately 12,000 scientists from 108 countries participated in this conference (www.egu2015.eu). Through the good possibilities for students to get in contact with the scientific community, almost a quarter of the participants were students at different stages of their studies. The most presentations were given as classical poster or oral presentation, except some PICO sessions. Those used a new presentation style with a two-minute oral presentation followed by a discussion with the author in front of an interactive screen. Several division meetings as well as some planetary and medal awarding lectures completed the program. For the spare times between the presentations, there was also the GeoCinema, showing movies about the work of some scientists, and the exhibition hall. In the latter, the MARUM was also present with an own booth, which provided a lot of information about research in Bremen and was a nice meeting point.

In the session “Sea level rise: past, present and future” I had the possibility to present a poster about my fieldwork on the sea-level history during the last interglacial in Mallorca, which represents the first part of my PhD project. I could show the methodology of gaining accurate elevations of different sea-level markers and my first results for this area. The session was open for any topic on paleo, recent and future sea-level rise and therefore the attendants came from several fields of study. The presentation of my poster led to some fruitful discussions and many good responses for my work. Through this session, I could also get in touch with many experienced researchers in my field and their studies.
The Austria Center is part of the UNO-City near to the Danube, so the conference took place in one of the nicest places in Vienna. As the registration fee included a public transportation ticket, it was also possible to explore the rest of the beautiful city in the few spare times in the evening.
