Report of GLOMAR PhD student Wang Haozhuang about his participation in the International Meeting of Sedimentology 2017 in Toulouse, France from 10 to 12 October 2017

The International Meeting of Sedimentology (IMS), 2017 was held from October 10th to 12th this year in the Congress Centre Pierre Baudis, Toulouse, France. More than one thousand participates from the whole world gathered for the meeting that focuses on varied researches about sedimentology.

In the conference, there were several topics that I was interested in, e.g. Carbonates & Bio-constructions, carbonate slopes and basins: sedimentary processes and archives through time.

The main topic which is closely related to my research was the session: Bio-Geo-Interactions in non-tropical and tropical marine carbonate systems. During this session, several talks related to the growth of different carbonate mound and the tropical coral distribution attracted me and inspired me a lot in better understanding the development of cold water corals and coral mounds in the past. During the poster session, I presented a poster which is entitled “Development of cold-water corals and coral mounds in two coral provinces, southern Alboran sea”. It was a good opportunity to discuss the development of cold-water corals and coral mounds in different point of view with other scientists from different institutions/universities. I received valuable feedbacks on both my research and the poster. These will be definitely helpful for my future research.

In the congress, some arrangements were very great. In the evening of 9th, October, a very nice icebreaker was organized in the city hall of Toulouse. I had very nice evening to meet with scientists and enjoy the French food. Besides, there were two workshops in the lunch time: one was about the career development for young scientists, and the other one was about how to publish scientific papers in journals, e.g. Sedimentology, Depositional Record. I participated in the second workshop and had the opportunity to listening to the lectures and have direct talk with the editors from these journals.

It was a very good experience to participate in this congress in Toulouse, especially when it was still in summer and I could enjoy the sunshine and French food. All in all, participating the International Meeting of Sedimentology helps me a lot in both expanding the scientific network and advertising my research. Thanks for GLOMAR for providing me the financial support for this meeting.
