Fenna Bergmann

Report of GLOMAR PhD student Fenna Bergmann about her participation in the International Meeting of Sedimentology 2017 in Toulouse, France from 10 to 12 October 2017

From the 10-12 October 2017 I attended the International Meeting of Sedimentology (IMS) 2017, a joint meeting of the 33rd International Sedimentological Association (IAS) and the 16th Association des Sédimentologistes Français (ASF), which took place in Toulouse in France. This combined meeting offered a wide spectrum of sessions addressing geological and sedimentological topics such as clastic sedimentary processes or sedimentary archives and basins. The IMS 2017 was visited by over 1000 participants including various known scientist as well as a huge number of early career scientist and PhD students from 64 different countries.

Especially of interest for me where the talks and posters presented in the sessions ‘Open Session on ‘Sources and Sinks’ as well as ‘Sediment density flows in siliciclasti, pyroclastic and calciclastic settings: process and product’ which showed me a lot of new aspects and ideas very helpful for the course of PhD project.

I got the chance to contribute to the IMS 2017 with giving a talk entitled 'Sinuosity-controlled deposition along a channel-levee system at the middle Bengal Fan – a high-resolution study integrating seismoacoustic and IODP Expedition 354 data’ in the session ‘Sources and Sinks’. This gave me not only the great opportunity to presents the results of my first PhD manuscript to the international scientific community but furthermore to strengthen my presentation skills and the experience of giving a talk in an amphitheater with 500 seats and around 150 people in the audience.

On the last day I attended the workshop ‘How to write a successful paper for Sedimentology or The Depositional Record’ during which three Chief Editors of the two journals first explained the does and don’ts of research papers and their submission, not only for Sedimentology, and afterwards answered all questions about publishing asked by the audience. Considering that I am very close to submitting my first own manuscript to a scientific journal this workshop answered a lot of my questions and was an amazing addition to the IMS 2017.

All in all, taking part in the IMS2017 was a great opportunity to strengthen my scientific network and advertise my research. I am very grateful to GLOMAR for their financial support which allowed me to attend this meeting.
