Report of GLOMAR PhD student Maryam Shahraki about her participation in the European Geosciences Union General Assembly , Vienna, Austria, 27 April - 2 May 2014

I am thankful for the GLOMAR support to participate European Geosciences Union General Assembly (EGU 2014). The EGU General assembly is one of the largest conferences concerning biogeochemistry and ocean sciences worldwide. I was able to present part of the results of my PhD work with the scope of food webs dynamic (e.g. stable isotope approach) in a poster entitled “Microphytobenthos sustain intertidal fish production in the Persian Gulf (Northern Indian Ocean)”. My poster was placed in the session: “Understanding the Indian Ocean System: Past, Present and Future”. This session focused on physical, biogeochemical, ecological, geological, coastal and atmospheric studies from the Indian Ocean. This gave me access to a suitable platform to present and discuss my work with scientists who have experience in my field and study the same geographic zone. I also got in contact to experts from other research projects being developed in similar regions but different topics. This helped me to see my own work in a different perspective, and to put it into a broader context.

Moreover, EGU meeting provided me comprehensive update of the most recent scientific developments in marine biogeochemistry and the key research zones in the Indian Ocean. What I enjoyed most about the EGU conference was listening to the great diversity of topics in biogeosciences and oceanography. This would inspire research ideas of my own and give me an insight for the alternative professional paths.

Many thanks to GLOMAR for granting me the opportunity to participate EGU 2014.
