Julia Haberkern

Report of GLOMAR PhD student Julia Haberkern about her participation in the 35th International Geological Congress in Cape Town, South Africa from 27 August – 4 September 2016

The 35th International Geological Conference (IGC) was held this year in Cape Town from August 27th until September 4th. With over 3000 oral presentations and more than 1700 posters, the organizers dubbed it the "world cup of geoscience". IGC bridged the gaps between geology in science, economy and society by having these as the core topics of the conference programme.

Marine Geosciences where represented in several sessions dedicated to topics such as ocean floor mapping, scientific ocean drilling or continental shelf sedimentation. One was especially dedicated to "Deep-water circulation: processes & products" and thus my main target. The presented studies covered the whole extends of up to date contourite research. This allowed me to gain an excellent overview and to position my own work within state of the art research. In the poster session, where I presented a poster with the title "Morphology of small-scale contouritic depositional systems associated to topographic heights at the Galician margin (NW-Spain)" I received a lot of interesting feedback and constructive criticism.

Complementary to the session on contourite deposits, Javier Hernandez-Molina and David van Rooij offered a one-day workshop on "Criteria for identifying contourite deposits". As the workshop took place on Saturday before the conference, it served as an efficient kick-off for the whole week. Not only did the workshop programme tie in theoretical concepts with scientific as well as industrial interests, it also helped enormously to get to know the other researchers as well as delegates from oil industry. For me this was especially helpful, since it got me into in-depth discussions even before I visited the first session of the conference. Amongst the manifold topics that I learned about, where new concepts which may have a direct application to my data. Thus my future research will definitely benefit from this information exchange.

All in all, taking part in the IGC helped me to significantly strengthen my network and advertise my research as well as gain an overview on ongoing projects in the community. I am very grateful to GLOMAR whose financial support helped me to attend this conference.
