Report of GLOMAR PhD student Igor Venancio about his participation in the SCOR/IGBP Working Group 138: Final Workshop & Short Course on Culturing of Planktonic Foraminifera in Santa Catalina Island, California, USA from 30 August – 4 September 2015

The SCOR 138 Final Workshop took place in Catalina Island (California, USA) from the 30th of August until the 4th of September. The workshop reviewed the results and research related to planktonic foraminifera over the last four years featuring reviews of taxonomy, genetic diversity, biology, ecology, shell geochemistry and biomineralisation, in the form of generally accessible state-of-the art review lectures. It was also linked to a to a short course on culturing of planktonic foraminifera, including demonstrations of collection methods, hands-on exercises setting up laboratory cultures, feeding, observation and manipulation of the culture medium.

During this workshop, I presented the first results of my PhD thesis in form of a poster (Lunar cyclicity in planktonic foraminifera shell fluxes in the southwestern Atlantic). This was an opportunity to discuss my findings with other researchers and incorporate their suggestions in my work. I also had the chance to attend outstanding lectures on topics related to my scientific field of research. Furthermore, the workshop presented a unique opportunity to learn more about planktonic foraminifers’ ontogeny and nutrition by hands-on activities with laboratory cultures.

I would like to thank GLOMAR for funding my participation in the SCOR 138 Workshop. It was a great experience, which helped me to expand my knowledge on the topic and to become visible to the scientific community.
