Report of GLOMAR PhD student Haozhuang Wang about his participation in the 41st Commission Internationale pour I’Exploration Scientifique de La Mer Mediterranee in Kiel, Germany from 12 - 16 September 2016

The 41st CIESM (Commission Internationale pour l’Exploration Scientifique de La Mer Mediterranee) congress was held in the University of Kiel, Germany this year from September 12th to 16th. Hundreds of participates from more than 26 countries gathered for the congress that focuses on varied researches about Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea.

During this conference, 300+ talks and 200+ posters were presented. Several studies were related to "deep-sea corals" and "paleoceanography" and thus were my main target. I presented a poster with the title "Past cold-water coral growth in the West Melilla Cold-Water Coral Province, Alboran Sea, related to high productivity and current velocity" in the paleoceanography session. During this time, I discussed with other researchers and received valuable feedbacks. Besides, I also benefited from other sessions, like sea level change, coastal dynamics, water masses and circulation, contamination and etc. The eutrophication associated researches in Mediterranean Sea helped me to deny several hypotheses. These help me a lot in better understanding the Mediterranean Sea and are useful for my future research.

In the congress, some arrangements are very good. For example, prestigious scientists are demanded to give a long talk about their understanding of specific field at the beginning of the secession, then researchers (PhD students included) are provided opportunities to present their work and have discussion with senior scientists. New researchers benefit a lot from the discussion.

It is a very good experience to participate in this congress in Kiel, in September, especially when it is always good weather for the whole week. All in all, participating the CIESM congress helps me a lot in expanding my scientific network and advertising my research, as well as an overview in ongoing projects. Thanks for GLOMAR for providing me the financial support for this congress.
