Report of GLOMAR PhD student Grit Warratz about her participation in the 35th International Geological Congress in Cape Town, South Africa from 27 August – 4 September 2016

Between the 27th of August and 4th September I attended the 35th International Geological Congress (IGC) and integrated workshop “Criteria for identifying contourite deposits” which took place in the Cape Town International Congress Center (CTICC) in Cape Town, South Africa.

The one-day workshop took place on Saturday, the 27th of August and was organized by Dr. F. Javier Hernández Molina and Dr. David Van Rooij. During the lectures seven speakers presented basic knowledge as well as their current research on contourite deposits in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The combination of presentations and practical exercises about seismic, logging characterization, mixed systems, sedimentary facies and microfacies were well-balanced and gave me the chance to get in contact to the specialists, i.e., Dr. A. Viana, as well as to other participants.

During the conference, there were diverse interesting topics related to oceanography, continental shelves during the Last Glacial Cycle, coastal studies and deep-water circulation processes, among many others. Despite of the large and complex conference schedule with several simultaneous sessions, I was able to listen to various selected talks and was introduced to interesting ongoing projects. On Wednesday, I presented a poster entitled “Variability of deep-water mass circulation at the Argentine Margin – Results from the Mar del Plata Canyon” in the session “Marine Geosciences and Oceanography”. During this session I had the opportunity to exchange ideas with sedimentologists and geophysicists who are working in that field of research and also partially in my study region in the Southwest Atlantic. Since some of them are using same methods, we could discuss difficulties we are facing during measurements and interpretation. They gave me hints and asked interesting questions which will help me to develop new approaches to finish my manuscript. Beside the main talks and poster sessions, several exhibition stands were present to inform myself about ways of publishing, a career in industry or to talk to various societies of my interest, i.e., the IAS.

Overall, I would like to thank GLOMAR for the financial support and therefore allowing me to gather more information in my field of research to proceed with my PhD project.
