Report of GLOMAR PhD student Eunmi Park about her participation in the Gordon Research Seminar and Conference on Organic Geochemistry in Holderness, New Hampshire, USA from 23 - 29 July 2016

Between the 23rd and the 28th of July, I attended the Gordon Research Seminar and Conference entitled "Advancing Technology in Organic Geochemistry to Address Society's challenges" in Holderness School, New Hampshire, USA.

Although it was the relatively small conference (130-150 participants) compared to other international conferences like the International Meeting on Organic Geochemistry (IMOG), there were more possibilities to get in contact with peers and students who are specialized in the same or related fields. This conference mainly focuses on Organic Geochemistry and brought together scientists and experts from academia, industry, and government in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. During the seminar and conference, there were a diverse range of interesting topics related to Organic Geochemistry have been presented including Biomarkers, Soil Organic Geochemistry, Microbial studies, and New analytical tools, Model studies, and Anthropocene.

On Wednesday and Thursday, I presented some results of my PhD project during the poster session entitled "TEX86 in sinking particles from the equatorial to the subpolar South Atlantic". During the session, I had an opportunity to talk with microbiologists and modelers who are working in that field of research. This gave me a completely different perspective to interpret my data and it will help me to develop new ideas. Besides a lot of interesting talks and posters, I was also impressed by the career panel discussion, which a career panel, at different stages in their career, shared their experiences of how they got to where they are today. This made me think about my future career in more details. What´s more, it was interesting to listen what challenges female senior scientists have faced in science and how they overcome and build up their career during an informal gathering.

Over all, I would like to thank GLOMAR for supporting me and therefore allowing me to gather information on the state of the art research and new ideas of how to proceed with my PhD project.
