Report of GLOMAR PhD student Claudia Pogoreutz about her participation in the Coral Reefs of Arabia Conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from 15 - 17 February 2015

The Coral Reefs of Arabia Conference hosted at the NYUAD in the UAE in Mid-February this year brought together a large number of reef scientists working on projects on the Arabian Peninsula, ranging from early stage researchers -including Nils Rädecker, the M.Sc. student involved in my own project- to leading senior scientists of international reputation. In total, the conference featured more than a 100 oral and poster presentations covering a rich selection of research going on in the region, including coral and fish ecology, microbiology, coral, symbiont, and fish physiology, sponge and Symbiodinium taxonomy, but also featured several contributions on remote sensing, geology, or the latest developments in seafloor mapping tools. Not only were these contributions of very high quality, it was also quite refreshing to see the diversity of projects focusing on the marine environments of the Arabian Peninsula, and how much research efforts have been increasing in this fascinating but highly understudied region during the past years! I particularly enjoyed a number of talks on previous and current conservation efforts on Arabian coral reefs, as well as the contributions on coral physiology and Symbiont biology.

Along with my ZMT co-worker Nils Rädecker and a number of PhD students from the Red Sea Research Center of my host institution in Mid-East, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), I presented first results of my PhD project in a special coral holobiont session. Nils and I were overwhelmed by all the positive feedback regarding our work and presentation style by the more seasoned researchers, and really enjoyed the discussions and chats with our peers during lunch and coffee breaks. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere provided a perfect environment for building and strengthening one’s academic network, and a great opportunity to catch up with familiar faces from previous meetings.

In a nutshell, participating at this meeting was a very nurturing and deeply rewarding experience.
I would like to sincerely thank Prof. John Burt and the NYUAD for hosting this great event and providing travel support.
