Asli Özmaral

Report of GLOMAR PhD student Asli Özmaral about her participation in the second PAST Gateways conference and workshop, Trieste, Italy, 19 - 23 May 2014

Each year, the ‘Palaeo-Arctic Spatial and Temporal (PAST) Gateways’ brings together scientists in a multidisciplinary international meeting to discuss current research and improvements in the understanding of Arctic environmental changes, i.e. a) growth and decay of Arctic ice sheets, b) Arctic sea-ice and ocean changes and c) non-glaciated Arctic environments including permafrost changes. Regarding the conference topics, there was a considerable overlap with my research work, which, among others, focuses on the development and dynamics of geomorphological structures in an arctic environment, i.e. the Kveithola Trough in the Barents Sea.

Scientific program started with a field excursion on the South-Eastern Italian Alps and Prealps; we visited the Alpine Würm moraines (Alpine LGM) and the evidences of the Little Ice Age in the Area of the Monte Canin. Talks that were given at the Growth and decay of Arctic Ice Sheets Session, made me learn more about recent and ongoing studies of the region. On the second and third day (after afternoon sessions), I had a chance to present my poster which was entitled: “Grounding Zone Wedges, Kveithola Trough (NW Barents Sea)”. Attending this conference was a great opportunity for me to meet with scientists from Arctic research, scientists especially who conduct geological/geophysical explorations of the polar margins with a focus on depositional processes and glacial history reconstructions. On the other hand, I was very pleased that Michele Rebesco agreed to meet me during the conference. In this respect, there was an opportunity to deepen plans of my possible research stay by meeting.

An optional field excursion took place at the end of the conference by visiting the the Pasterze Glacier (Großglockner 3798 m, Austrian Alps). Participating in both of those field excursions has provided me a better understanding of contemporary glacial geology and geomorphology.I am very grateful to GLOMAR for the financial support to participate in this conference.
