Report of GLOMAR PhD student Alexander Rösner about his participation in the American Geophysical Union Joint Meeting 2017 in Japan from 20 to 25 May 2017

The “Japan Geoscience Union – American Geophysical Union Joint Meeting” was held from 20. -25.05.2017 in Chiba, Japan. It was the first joint meeting between the Japanese Geoscience Union and the American Geophysical Union. It is probably the third biggest geoscientific conference worldwide with more than 8,000 participants.

The conference had a strong focus on Japan-related geoscientific topics. The study area of my Ph.D. project is located offshore Japan, making this conference a unique place to meet Japanese colleagues and establish future collaborations. On the first day, I attended the “mud volcanoes” session, which was hosted by Miho Asada, a collaborator of the “Marine Geotechnics” working group at MARUM . My colleague Walter Menapace contributed with a poster to this session, summarizing the preliminary results of R/V Sonne cruise SO251. Walter was not able to join the meeting so I presented the results on his place (I am Co-Author of his poster). During the following days, I focused on subduction zone and scientific drilling related sessions. In 2016, I participated as onboard scientist to IODP Exp. 365, upon which my Ph.D. project is mainly based on. This conference was the first occasion to reencounter the other on-board scientists and check about our mutual progresses. Moreover, the two-day long session “Subduction zone dynamics from regular earthquakes through slow earthquakes to creep” was of special interest to me, because I presented the preliminary results of my Ph.D. project on a poster. The poster, with the title “Investigation of tidal-induced poroelastic responses at IODP Sites C0010 and C0002 along the Kumano Transect - SE Japan”, was presented on the first day. This presentation gave me the chance to discuss my results with other researchers, which were interested in deep-sea observatory data. Their feedback will guide me through the upcoming months. In general, I spend most of the time at the poster sessions to get in touch with other early career scientists. Hence, the poster sessions were a great networking opportunity where, amongst other things, I had the possibility to discuss my methods with other researchers using similar techniques for time series analysis.

Besides the above-mentioned sessions, I attended the keynote speeches given by Prof. Lucy Jones and Prof. Thaaki Kajita. Moreover, I participated in a seminar called “Tips for a Successful Manuscript Submission”, which will help to improve the outcome of my first manuscript.

In summary, my first internarial conference was a great success. I extended my scientific network and I got valuable feedback for my ongoing research. Therefore, I would like to thank GLOMAR for their financial support.
