Report of Guest PhD student Oscar Andres Alvarez Silva about his research placement at MARUM from June - December 2014
With the support of the GLOMAR Research Placement Programme I had the opportunity to come to MARUM and make a six months research stay with the Coastal Dynamics group led by Dr. Christian Winter.
The aim of my stay was to study the physical suitability and potentials of harnessing Salinity Gradient Energy (SGE) at river mouths. During the first part of the stay I studied (as an exemplary case) the behavior of the salinity structure of Weser River Estuary using data provided by the German Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW).
From the analysis of this and other river mouths, in the second part of the stay we proposed a relation for estimating the available SGE resources of river mouths and a classification of these systems according to the suitability for SGE generation in terms of some physical variables that are readily determined for most river mouths. Further joint research in the estimation of the global potential SGE was started and will continue after the end of the stay.
Additionally, I had the opportunity to join the GLOMAR research theme B (Ocean and Seafloor) and attend the monthly research seminars, which I found very interesting. Here PhD student can present regularly their projects, receive constructive feedback from other students and improve professional skills. Another very interesting experience was to participate and co-chair a session in the ECC2014 (5th Early Career Scientists Conference for Marine and Climate Research), a nice opportunity to meet the new researchers in marine sciences in Germany and other countries.
I express my gratitude to GLOMAR for make possible the wonderful experience of studying in MARUM and living in Germany. During this time I brought my PhD research to a decisive stage, developed strong research cooperation relations, did good friends and learned about the German culture… und ein bisschen Deutsch.
