Vane Shear
Applicable during research cruises and in the lab, the vane shear apparatus is a fast and easy way to determine a first approximation of the stiffness of cohesive soils. In Marum, we use a Wykeham-Farrance Vane Shear Model 27-WF1730/2
The vane shear comes with different vane sizes and four calibrated springs to fit all kind of sediments. For the measurement, the four-bladed vane is inserted into the material and then rotated at a constant rate of 90°/min.
The undrained shear strength depends on the max torque required to shear the sediment T and the vane constant Κ.
SU = T/K
