Biology of ammonia-oxidizing archaea

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) are ubiquitous and abundant microorganisms and catalyze the initial step of nitrification in many environments. Using the first cultured representative Nitrosopumilus maritimus (left) as modell organism for this group, I investigate the physiology, biochemistry and ecology of AOA and their role in the marine biogeochemical cycles. Within the Organic Geochemistry Group, we study the impact of environmental factors on the synthesis of archaeal membrane lipids to survey their application as biomarker in the ocean and as biogeochemical proxy in marine sediments.
