Report of GLOMAR PhD student Qian Yu about his research stay at Nanjing University, China, from 13 January 2009 - 8 January 2010

under the support of GLOMAR and the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Coast and Island Development, Nanjing University, China.

Qian Yu came to Nanjing for the laboratory experiments to measure the sediment grain size and shape information using a new instrument “Ankersmid Particle Size & Shape Analysis (APSSA)”. During this period, Prof. Shu Gao and Prof. Yaping Wang organized the experiment schedule, and asked Mr. Zhang Liang, a master students, who have been trained in the company producing APSSA, to help me to use this new instrument in details. Because this instrument is very new and not widely used in the geosciences field, some problems still existed and were solved by us during the work.

In total, 99 samples, from both Wadden sea tidal inlets and North Jiangsu coastal tidal flats, were measured by APSSA, and a large amount of data on their grain size and shape were obtained successfully. In addition, 62 samples were measures by laser methods in Nanjing University for grain size, and 37 samples were brought back to Senckenberg Institute, Wilhelmshaven, for setting tube analysis also for the sample purpose. The finial objective is to quantify the contributions of the grain shape and to establish the relationship between the results from different grain-size measuring methods.

At last, thanks a lot for the people who help me to carry out these experiments and also for the financial support from GLOMAR and logistic support from the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Coast and Island Development, Nanjing University.
