Report of GLOMAR PhD student Nikesh Narayan about his research stay at the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences (COAS), Oregon State University (OSU) at Corvallis, oregon, USA, from 1 December 2008 - 28 February 2009

As part of the GLOMAR research stay at an external institute program, I spend three months in College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences (COAS), Oregon State University(OSU) at Corvallis USA. There, I was supported and guided by Prof. Alan Mix and Prof. Roger Samelson. With their help I developed a very high resolution (~3km horizontal, 20 vertical levels) Regional Ocean Modeling system (ROMS) for the coast off Chile (34ºS- 44ºS and 72ºW-78ºW), which was forced using wind stress, fresh water flux and solar radiation from Comprehensive Ocean Atmosphere Dataset (COADS). I used Flather (1976) radiation condition for depth averaged velocity and Chapman (1985) condition for averaged free surface. Due to the very high resolution in the model, I had to use a very short time step, which made the calculations extremely long to perform. Parallel processing techniques were utilized to reduce the computational time. Since I had to utilize the computing facilities in Bremen, transferring of huge datasets was also a problem.

The aim of the modeling experiment was to determine the source of upwelling water mass to the South of Punta Lavapie. To determine this a Lagrangian method was used, in which a series of floats which are driven by the model generated velocities was incorporated into the model. Different modeling experiments were performed by deploying the floats at different locations and depths. Preliminary results suggests that the upwelling source water for South of Punta Luvapie upwelling region comes from the further south and water carried by the Poleward Under Current (PUC) from north of Cape Arauco moves further offshore away from the upwelling area.

My research stay at OSU was fruitful in both academic and social ways. I was able to interact with lot of excellent researchers and Professors during my stay and also OSU had a very varied bunch of international scholars from different countries with whom I could interact and participate in many social events. I would like to thank GLOMAR for the magnificent financial and moral support.
