Report of GLOMAR PhD student Igor Venancio about his research stay at the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE), Gif-sur-Yvette, France from 20 June - 12 July 2016

I spent almost a month in Gif-sur-Yvette (France) from 20th of June to 12th of July. The major aim of my research stay was to discuss my data with other researchers and to start writing one of the manuscripts of my thesis.

I spent my research stay at the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE) in Gif-sur-Yvette under the supervision of Dr. Aline Govin. The first days were dedicated to test different approaches for age modelling. Dr. Aline Govin and I worked to improve the age model of the core that I am studying by testing different age modelling softwares and by comparing the data with different reference curves. We tested distinct settings on Bacon, Clam and Oxcal, which are the most used softwares for age modelling. During this period, I learned a lot about how to build a robust age model for my core, something I had no previous experience.

The remaining time was used to discuss the data from the core (GL-1248) located western tropical Atlantic. During this time, Dr. Aline Govin introduced me to other researchers of the institute Dr. Claire Waelbroeck, Dr. Natalia Vazquez Riveiros, Dr. Evelyn Böhm, and I had time to discuss my data with some of these researchers. This was very productive for me, since I have never worked before in that study area and most of these researchers are very experienced particularly with the tropical Atlantic. The discussions gave me new insights and ideas for my manuscript, which I began to write already during my research stay.

Overall, my research stay in Gif-sur-Yvette was very successful and helped me gain more experienced in my research field. I enjoyed my time in Gif-sur-Yvette and everyone that I met was very friendly. It was also interesting to learn more about scientific research in France and their culture. Finally, I would like to thank GLOMAR for the funding for my research stay.
